Goodbye California - Hello Oregon (D-79: 1655.9 - 1680.2, D-80: 1680.2 - 1708.2, D-81: 1708.2 - 1717.7)

Finally California came to an end yesterday! Took 80 days to walk the length of California...it sure is a big state - whew!!

Before that, on Day 79, left Seiad Valley after an early breakfast at the Seiad Cafe. Took a 12-mile long, but pleasant road walk as the trail was reportedly overgrown and not fully maintained and joined the trail at mile 1657. Didn't see anything spectacular on this day and hardly took any pics.

   Waterfall by the road

As the day came to a close, the weather started turning and it started lightly drizzling. Decided to set up camp early before it started pouring. It did rain slightly overnight, but it became a bit more persistent early morning just as we were starting out 😏.

It was a rather damp and foggy all of Day 80.

Of course, the biggest highlight of the day was crossing into Oregon.

Guess the wet & clammy day was an Oregonian welcome 🙂.

Cows along the trail (reminded me of India 😀)

Since it was such a wet day and there was prediction of more rain overnight, we decided to stay in a picnic shelter along the trail. They only one seen so far on PCT.

And, the shelter had a fireplace right in the center (which helped dry the wet shoes and socks) as well as a nice clean pit toilet next to it. A few other hikers had also decided to take advantage of this shelter and there were a total of 9 hikers. Long time since I had seen so many hikers at the same campsite. It was fun!

Guess this was also an Oregonian welcome!

Woke up the next day to a very foggy morning and a light misty drizzle. However today was a town day. Everybody was going into Ashland - the first town on the trail in Oregon! Quickly hiked to Interstate 5 and called a local taxi to take us into town. Then it was the standard nero day activities - starting with breakfast, of course.

Did resupply shopping and also shipped out 2 boxes of food to places down the trail - enough food to get us through the whole of Oregon.

For lunch, had Indian buffet - the first Indian non-ready-to-eat food I had in 2.5 months.

Finally, did hand-washing of clothes as there was no nearby laundry & dried them outside the hotel room.

My gear and my tramily (D-97 @ 2148 - Zero day)

Some of you have asked about what gear I am using. Since today is a Zero day (the last Zero day was on D-57) and there is nothing much to report other than the fact that I shipped the last set of resupply boxes to different places in Washington state and ate substantial amounts of food today, I figured I might as well talk about my gear, and also a bit about the other most essential component on the hike - my "tramily" (trail-family).   Tent : 1-person Rainbow Li from Tarptent (bought new). This has worked very well for me and as you know from my earlier posts, Tarptent has given very good customer service too. I haven't had the chance to use the tent in heavy rain or snow (luckily) though and can't comment on it. I use a Tyvek ground sheet (already owned), also from Tarptent. Backpack : Catalyst from ULA (already owned).  I started with Zpack Arc Air Robic 60L (bought new) and used it for 700 miles, but it was not comfortable at...

Pleasures of being on PCT (D-16; 303.7 - 328.8 miles)

Heading out from the cowboy camping experience last night, I was looking forward to Deer Creek Hot Springs that is apparently very popular among the locals too & tended to get crowded during the weekends, even though one has to hike in a mile or so from the trailhead parking (or hike 308 miles on PCT 🙂). Reached it early enough, but still it was chock full of people - locals & thru-hikers both - most of whom had camped there overnight in spite of it being a No Camping zone. People were lazing around in some of the pools in various states of undress, as it was a clothing optional area. It was way too crowded for me and I decided to head out. But, as I was heading out, I saw a small pool of water with nobody in it and the water was pleasantly hot (not just warm). Pool I "discovered" away from the crowds Close-up of the pool Me in the pool 😋 What a lovely feeling to be in a hot pool, especially after not having had a hot ...
