Castella is a small town on Interstate 5, with the bigger towns of Dunsmuir and Mt. Shasta on the other side of I-5. Literally the only businesses in Castella are a fuel station with a convenience store, a post office and a couple of campgrounds/RV parks (as far as I could tell). Apart from these, there is the Castle Crags State Park. The crag formation is what you see in the pic above.
For us, the most important part was the post office since we had sent our resupply food box there. Of course, the convenience store was exciting since it would have a variety of food and drink 🙂.
A quick 12-mile hike in the morning got us close to Castella. Took the road to the State Park campground, as there were showers there. And they were free!
Washed clothes too in the shower, since laundry was not an option. Dried them out on the camp gate.
Then headed to the post office which was next to the fuel station & opened only at 11 am & shut at 3 pm.
The postal clerk was just opening the PO when we walked in. He could not locate my box though tracking said it was in the PO. He asked me to check in the convenience since a lot of PCT hiker boxes were sent there. Luckily, found my box in the store, even though it was addressed to General Delivery in the PO! Oh well!!
Repacked, had a small breakfast & lunch from the packaged food items in the store and then we headed back to the trail. Spent a total of 4 hours in Castella.
Blue arrow: post office, red arrow: convenience store and the place next to it where we sat on the ground to repack and have breakfast/lunch.
Hiked a few more hours and then camped here.
Note: My Spot GPS tracker is back in action, after a loooong gap. Got a replacement one and if you are interested, you can track my progress again, starting this afternoon.
